lot-0000, title: architectural redesign of the ns documentation center cologne (reconstruction + interiors + staircase), description: the ns documentation center of the city of cologne (ns-dok) is a contemporary historical museum, one of the largest municipal memorials for the victims of national socialism in germany, and the most visited ns historical site in north rhine-westphalia (2025: 95,546 visitors). in may 2025, the city council of cologne approved the redesign of the exhibition and public areas of the ns-dok. the project will be implemented in two sub-projects: sub-project a (not the subject of this, but a future tender) includes the realization of a new permanent exhibition in the former cologne gestapo headquarters in the building section appellhofplatz 23-25. sub-project b (subject of this tender) includes the relocation and redesign of further service and public areas of the museum in the building section appellhofplatz 21. this is a former residential and commercial building that was partially destroyed during world war ii, which was connected to the former gestapo headquarters during reconstruction in the late 1940s, and whose facade was visually adapted. the entire ensemble is under monument protection. the overarching goal of the measure advertised here is to equip the building section appellhofplatz 21 from the basement to the second floor with modern, appealing service and public areas. this is intended to significantly improve the quality of stay and visitor experience in the museum. in the former gestapo headquarters, space will also be made available for the establishment of the new permanent exhibition. specifically, it is planned to relocate the main entrance of the museum from the former entrance of the gestapo headquarters to the entrance of the building section appellhofplatz 21. on the ground floor of this building section, a new, generously designed and air-conditioned foyer will create space for ticketing, shop, cloakroom lockers, and an attractive lounge area. the foyer is also to be used for events. the adjacent sanitary facilities are to be enlarged. in the rear area of the ground floor and in the basement, the public library and the archive of the ns-dok will receive new locations. for proper storage of the collections, in addition to the installation of an air conditioning system, further structural repair measures are necessary. on the first and second floors of the building section appellhofplatz 21, two temporary exhibition spaces will be created. the spaces must be equipped accordingly. the event room located on the second floor is to be technically upgraded. a new staircase will connect the museum foyer with the temporary exhibition spaces and the event room on one side and the courtyard belonging to the permanent exhibition at the basement level on the other side. acces
