π Tender Overview
Create a new map of all train connections, with line numbers, that NS can hang at the station. That was the competition that NS organized at the beginning of the year to get travelers to think about designing a new card.Alain Lemaire from Arnhem saw the assignment, got to work and was chosen as the winner among more than sixty entries.

A new map will be displayed at many stations in the Netherlands from mid-December.NS will communicate with line numbers from the start of the new timetable. So that includes a new card.More than 60 card enthusiasts submitted their designs. There was a huge variety in the entries;from artistic circular lines to a much more abstract representation of the railway network.Alain Lemaire also participated and emerged as the winner. This morning his card was briefly on display at Utrecht Central Station.Calm and clearA jury consisting of Eelco van Asch (NS Board of Directors), Dieuwertje van Egmond (Head of Travel Guidance), Daan Zieren (Rover Director) and Mirjam Hooghuis (NS Accessibility) considered more than sixty entries. Alain has found the balance between tranquility in the design and information provision, says the jury report.By combining elements, but accurately displaying the most relevant information, the design supports the primary moment of use: quickly checking which route or connection is relevant for the traveler at a specific moment.
The result will hopefully help travelers get on their way faster - whether they are boarding a Dutch train for the first time or are seasoned travelers.
Alain Lemaire, winner of line number card,,
Slightly to the rightAlain Lemaire has thought carefully about the map.For me, a schematic map is successful if it shows a network as clearly as possible, and at the same time the place depicted - in this case the Netherlands - can still be recognized in it.To keep the Netherlands recognizable, I used a trick.I first designed the map with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines, as you see on most line maps.I then rotated the result slightly to the right, because the Netherlands also slopes slightly to the right on maps. The result will hopefully help travelers get on their way faster - whether they are boarding a Dutch train for the first time or are seasoned travelers. The technical details are now being finalized, in collaboration with the Mijksenaar agency. The map is also being tested at the station itself. The final version will soon be available digitally; it will be available at stations in the Netherlands from December 13.
Explained: NS introduces line numbers
Line numbers All NS train lines will have their own number from the 2027 timetable. This means that from now on, travelers can also recognize their train by a fixed line number.Line numbers should make planning, traveling and transferring easier.Intercity trains and Sprinters each have their own line number, such as the IC6 between Leeuwarden and The Hague or the S75 between Rotterdam and Uitgeest.More information about line numbers can be found at ns.nl/lijnnummers.
