π Tender Overview
EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and Argentina's Energy Secretary Eduardo Rodriguez Chirillo today announced new projects to implement the Memorandum of UnderstandingEuropean Union (EU)-Argentina in the field of renewable energy, hydrogen and the reduction of methane emissions.
The EU and Argentina have now agreed on further concrete actions, including cooperation between companies in the sector on investment projects and technical assistance in renewable hydrogen. These projects also build on the recent "LNG net" expert exchange course.which took place in Buenos Aires on the reduction of methane emissions.
A β¬4 million hydrogen cooperation project is also being launched today through the EU Global Gateway programme, EUROCLIMA. It will include technical assistance to support the energy dialogue between the EU and Argentina and will help promote trade and investment in renewable hydrogen. Funding is provided under the NDICI programme and will be combined with contributions from other EU Member States, such as the Team Europe initiative.
The EU technical assistance on renewable hydrogen aims to provide institutional support and facilitate research in support of the hydrogen market in Argentina. In parallel, the EU-Argentina energy dialogue will continue to prioritise renewable energy and renewable hydrogen in order to attract investments in Argentina.
Before the end of 2024, a team of Argentine technical experts in the field of energy will visit the EU to participate in high-level energy events and discuss how to deepen energy cooperation between the EU and Argentina.
Other energy initiatives will also be carried out, such as the expansion and modernisation of the electricity transmission network and workshops on the certification of renewable hydrogen under EU delegated acts for renewable fuels of non-biological origin.
Context
This announcement builds on the already well-established dialogue between the EU and Argentina on energy, covering, among other things, renewable energy, energy efficiency and hydrogen. The dialogue was reinforced by the memorandum of understandingin the field of renewable energy, signed on 17 July 2023 in Brussels.
The EU-Argentina energy dialogue is supported by statements, initiatives and agreements established at the High Level Dialogue on Energy and at the meeting of the Twelfth Joint Cooperation Committee between the EU and Argentina, held in Buenos Aires on 22 June 2022, under the provisions of the Framework Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the European Economic Community and the Argentine Republic of 1990.
Cooperation on renewable energy is also given priority in the Global Gateway Investment Agenda between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean., which was created to promote a fair green and digital transition. The President of the Commission presented the Agenda at the EU-CELAC Business Roundtable, in the context of the EU-CELAC Summit held in Brussels in July 2023.
The European Commission coordinates the development and implementation of the EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda, which is a political commitment to work together, identifying fair, green and digital investment opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean. It highlights 130 representative projects in Latin American and Caribbean countries to boost smart investments that promote sustainable growth in key sectors such as health, renewable energy, digital connectivity, critical raw materials, research and innovation.
The EU-LAC Global Gateway investment agenda will be implemented through Team Europe initiatives: the EU, its Member States, development finance institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB), export credit agencies and all other public sources of finance will collaborate in public-private partnerships.
