Work begins to transform the eastern accesses to Montevideo with an investment of 74 million dollars

The MTOP works plan seeks to solve the problems of vehicle congestion, connectivity and road safety at four critical points of the road network on the eastern approaches to Montevideo. The project, which will be developed in different stages, covers the intersection of routes 101 and 102, whose works have already begun; the intersection of Avenida de las Américas and Route 101; the roundabout in Calcagno; and the avenues of the Americas and Racine.
The Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) announced the start of a set of strategic interventions on the eastern accesses to Montevideo, with the aim of improving metropolitan mobility, reducing travel times and strengthening road safety in one of the busiest areas of the country.
These interventions will make it possible to solve historical congestion problems, optimize connectivity with the Carrasco International Airport and organize circulation in a fundamental corridor for the transportation of people and goods in the metropolitan area.
Less travel time and more road safety
The plan aims to generate a comprehensive transformation of the road infrastructure in the east of Montevideo and Canelones, the MTOP reported on its website. Its main objectives include the reduction of travel times, the reorganization of traffic through new auxiliary roads and the separation of vehicular flows, as well as a substantial improvement in safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
The works will also incorporate specific infrastructure for vulnerable users, with new pedestrian paths, safe crossings and solutions that facilitate mobility throughout the area.
Circulation during works
In order to minimize the impact on traffic, alternative roads will be built that will allow two traffic lanes to remain operational in both directions during the execution of the works.
The authorities will permanently inform about possible detours and recommended routes through official communications, the social networks of the Highway Police, the Canelones Municipality and the MTOP, in addition to variable messaging panels located before the intervened areas.
Investment and deadlines
The total execution of the project will require approximately 26 months. The works are in charge of the Perimetral Este Group, made up of the companies Grinor, Molinsur and Serviam.
The investment planned for this first stage amounts to 74 million dollars, including maintenance tasks.
Currently, work has already begun at the intersection of routes 101 and 102, with an estimated duration of four months, and on Calcagno Avenue, where the works will last eight months.
Detail of the interventions
Intersection of routes 101 and 102
The road will be widened to increase circulation capacity and improve traffic flow. The project incorporates new approach lanes on both routes, the construction of pedestrian paths and the adaptation of traffic lights, which will be monitored by the Center for Intelligent Transit Systems (CSIT) of the MTOP.
New roundabout on Calcagno avenue
The new infrastructure will connect Calcagno Avenue and the service roads of Route 101 with the existing roundabout around the airport. This solution will allow vehicle movements to be organized and facilitate more efficient circulation.
Avenue of the Americas intersection – route 101
A viaduct will be built that will connect the Avenida de las Américas with Route 101 in an elevated manner. The work will keep the existing roundabout on the lower level in operation, which will contribute to reducing travel times.
Intersection Avenue of the Americas – Racine Avenue
The project provides for the construction of a viaduct over Racine Avenue. At the lower level, a new roundabout will be developed along with lateral service roads to organize local traffic. Likewise, a pedestrian passage will be incorporated that will connect both sectors of Roosevelt Park.
