π Tender Overview
Since the war ended in northern Ethiopia in November 2022, MSF teams have been mobilizing to restore access to healthcare for isolated populations in the north of the country. This year, MSF is doubling the number of mobile clinics that regularly visit isolated villages, from five to ten mobile units. MSF teams also rehabilitated an operating room at Korem general hospital.
Northern Ethiopia's health system has been deeply disrupted by two years of conflict commonly known as the "Tigray War." After the signing of a peace agreement between the belligerents, MSF teams were able to go to areas previously inaccessible for security reasons.
In December 2022, MSF began working in the areas around the towns of Alamata and Korem, after observing that health establishments had been destroyed or looted during the fighting, that they were deprived of equipment and that they were experiencing supply difficulties. Two MSF mobile medical teams now support seven health centers and three health posts in hard-to-reach areas of this region.
Between January and December 2023, more than 30,000 medical consultations were carried out using five mobile clinics, including some 13,000 for children under the age of five. More than 6,500 women have benefited from maternal or gynecological health care. MSF has doubled the number of mobile clinics this year, from five sites in 2023 to ten sites in 2024.
On the other hand, in January 2024, MSF and the Ministry of Health inaugurated the operating theater of the Korem general hospital and an emergency obstetric and neonatal care unit, where newborns and women with complications during pregnancy, childbirth or after childbirth can receive comprehensive care. This rehabilitation will improve access to surgical care and guarantee the treatment of medical complications in pregnant women, some of whom are referred from MSF mobile clinics.
MSF teams in Korem are also developing specialized training in health promotion for hospital staff and community health workers living in hard-to-reach areas.
On June 24, 2021, our colleagues MarΓa HernΓ‘ndez Matas, Tedros Gebremariam Gebremichael and Yohannes Halefom Reda were brutally and intentionally killed in the Tigray region, despite being clearly identified as humanitarian workers. After numerous discussions with the Ethiopian authorities, MSF still has no credible answer about what happened to them. MSF continues to seek responsibility for this incident.
