Haiti Wfp Steps Tender

πŸ“„ Tender ID: 511416773 πŸ“… Published: 03 Dec 2024

πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is scaling up its operations in Haiti to respond to rising food needs amid a hunger crisis driven largely by violence and displacement.

More than 50,000 Haitians have been displaced in the past two weeks due to insecurity linked to armed groups. Across the country, 5.4 million people face acute hunger, one of the highest per capita proportions of food insecurity globally.

β€œWFP stands firmly by the side of the people of Haiti in this challenging time,” said Wanja Kaaria, WFP Country Director in Haiti, from Port-au-Prince. β€œIn recent months we have delivered record amounts of food assistance in Port-au-Prince and across the country, and we will do even more in the coming weeks.”

WFP teams have remained operational throughout the crisis, working from the head office in Port-au-Prince and four additional field offices in the country.

DISPLACEMENTS AGGRAVATING HUNGER: WFP PROVIDES HOT MEALS AND CASH ASSISTANCE
The number of internally displaced people in Haiti has surpassed 700,000, mainly in the capital Port-au-Prince and the Artibonite region.

In response to the recent surge in displacement, WFP and its partners have stepped up support with hot meals and cash assistance. The agency is now providing meals to more than 50,000 internally displaced people daily – the highest number of people served per day since the start of the crisis.

In November, WFP and its partners served a record 834,000 hot meals in 48 sites hosting displaced people, including those forced to flee due to the latest fighting.

So far this year, WFP has provided nearly three million hot meals, mostly prepared with locally grown and procured ingredients.

GROWING FOOD SECURITY NEEDS
The latest data from the Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) analysis shows that one in two Haitians does not have enough to eat, two million face emergency levels of hunger and up to 6,000 internally displaced people are experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger (IPC Phase 5).

Food insecurity has been on the rise in Haiti in recent years, with prevalence rising from 35% in 2019 to 48% in 2024, the highest level since the 2010 earthquake.

WFP EXPANDS OPERATIONS TO MEET NEEDS
WFP plans to expand its food assistance operations to respond to the growing number of affected people, aiming to reach 1.85 million people with emergency assistance, while supporting efforts to strengthen national resilience systems. To fund its operations over the next six months, WFP needs US$94 million.

Last week, the agency chartered two vessels to transport 21 truckloads of food, medicine and health supplies from Port-au-Prince to the southern region. This will allow WFP to preposition food for its operations and those of local partners, as well as replenish medicines and health items that have been out of stock for months in health facilities.

So far this year, WFP has assisted a total of 1.7 million people in Haiti through emergency aid, school meals, social protection programmes and resilience activities. Families with pregnant and lactating women, as well as children under five years of age, receive additional food to prevent malnutrition.

More than 470,000 school-age children in Haiti receive a daily meal thanks to WFP and the Government, most of it prepared with locally grown ingredients.

This month, WFP regained access to Croix-des-Bouquets, north of the capital, which was previously off-limits to humanitarian workers due to violence by armed groups. Thanks to this development, WFP has distributed rice, beans and oil to 50,000 people, as part of a large-scale distribution across multiple neighbourhoods that has reached nearly 150,000 people.

To support scale-up efforts, the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), managed by WFP, provides passenger and light cargo transport services to nine destinations within Haiti, creating a vital link for the humanitarian community.
