π Tender Overview
Members of the Security Council are this afternoon considering the authorization given by resolution 2240 (2015), which is about to expire. The text, revised a year ago by resolution 2698 (2023), authorizes Member States to inspect boats sailing off the coast of Libya if they have βreasonable grounds to suspect that they are being used for the smuggling of migrants.β
While the pen-bearing delegations (France and Malta) have already indicated that they do not intend to request an extension of the authorisation, which effectively results in the extinction of the authorisation, the Russian Federation has requested this information session in order to be able to discuss the issue.
