- - -Seniors Services to Resume with WRHA Support Following Lions Housing Centres Decision to End Program: Asagwara
The Manitoba government is ensuring adult day programming for seniors continues in Winnipegs Charleswood neighbourhood after Lions Housing Centres announced it would close its long-standing program, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced today.
Our government will always act to protect seniors and the services they rely on, said Asagwara. When families raised concerns about losing this important program, we listened and we acted. Working with Deer Lodge, were reopening this program in the same space seniors are familiar with in Charleswood. Weve called on Lions to work with government to fast-track access so programming can continue for seniors.
The program was previously operated by Lions Housing Centres and funded by Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care before Lions Housing Centres announced it would end operations on Oct. 31. Following intervention by the Manitoba government, Deer Lodge Centre is assuming operations at the same Charleswood location with the goal of minimizing disruptions to programming.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority remains committed to maintaining access to these important programs and to build on them, including in Charleswood, so more seniors can receive the care, connection and support they need close to home, Jane Curtis, interim president and CEO, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. That is why we stepped in quickly to ensure the program is able to continue at its current location once we learned that Lions was ending their lease.
Deer Lodge Centre is also expanding its adult day program and will add 20 participant spaces for seniors living with dementia, providing more opportunities to stay active, connected and supported in their communities, the minister noted.
Adult day programs help seniors remain connected to their communities and continue living independently at home. They offer a range of services, including therapeutic recreation, nutritious meals and snacks, health and safety education and community outings.
