Satellites are getting better and more accurate. For example the emission of greenhouse gases and other polluting substances. This data can be used even better for emission estimates if satellites fly over more often and measure more precisely. For example satellites can be an important addition to existing measurement data in the future. This is stated in the inventory that the RIVM made among 24 possible users of satellite data.Various organisations such as RIVM governments and researchers use this data. The Netherlands Space Office NSO can use the research results to determine which developments regarding satellite data are needed in the future. Satellites complement not replace existing measurementsUsers need more precise satellite measurements of increasingly smaller areas. In this way it can also be determined from a small emission source such as a factory pipe which substances this source emits. According to users satellite data is an important addition to among other things extensive local measurements on the ground. Practical problems existing satellite data The research also shows that users of satellite data encounter practical problems. For example they cannot find the data properly or they do not know how to use it. Sometimes there is also a lack of money to get started with the data. It is therefore important that organizations cooperate more. By sharing knowledge and data sources satellite data can become more user-friendly and accessible. This also creates more possibilities for giving meaning to the satellite data.
