π Tender Overview
In 2024, the MINAM Forests Program strengthened the capacities of 11 regional governments by delivering advanced technological equipment. With an investment of S/ 1,377,547.76, drones, GPSs, workstation computers, monitors, specialized software, among others, were distributed, optimizing the monitoring of changes in forest cover.
In addition, in regions such as San Martin, Loreto and Ucayali, compasses, camping equipment and submetric GPS were added, key tools for territorial demarcation. These actions consolidated an effective regional monitoring network in Pasco, Loreto, Junin, Ayacucho, Amazonas, Cusco, Madre de Dios, San Martin, Huanuco, Puno and Ucayali.
Technical strengthening
In addition, the Forest Program carried out capacity-building actions for the use of forest monitoring information in nine regions (Ayacucho, Cusco, Huanuco, Junin, Pasco, Puno, San Martin, Ucayali and Amazonas), training 120 specialists. The sessions addressed the use of the GEOBOSQUES platform, analysis of forest loss, generation of early warnings and preparation of loss concentration maps.
The use of various advanced technological tools, beyond the use of the GEOBOSQUES platform, such as the use of Planet satellite images, for example, contribute to improving the precision in the identification of critical areas, strengthening conservation strategies. The last workshop of the year, held in Ucayali in December, marked the closing of these activities, consolidating the inter-institutional commitment.
Featured example: Pasco Regional Government
A notable example of strengthening is the case of the Pasco Regional Government, which developed its own monitoring reports using information from the GEOBOSQUES platform. These reports covered the analysis of early warnings of forest loss between January and September, assessed their distribution across district boundaries and territorial categories, and identified native communities, fragile ecosystems, concessions, and protected natural areas with a high concentration of warnings.
The reports were sent to the Forest Program and to the municipalities of the region, integrating them into forest management and establishing a precedent for other regions.
Macroregional and national meetings
In June, representatives from six regional governments participated in a workshop in Tarapoto to coordinate efforts in forest management through satellite monitoring. In October, in Lima, the workshop Forest Monitoring: Regional Reports, Progress and Challenges was held, where key actors shared achievements and discussed the challenges of monitoring the Amazon.
Inter-institutional commitment and financing
These actions are part of a public investment project implemented by the MINAM Forests Program, with financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This joint effort reinforces the monitoring and protection of Amazonian forests, ensuring a sustainable future for Peru.
On the loss of Amazonian rainforests in 2023
As every year, the Forests Program continued with the permanent monitoring of the more than 78 million hectares of Peruvian Amazonian rainforests to identify changes in their coverage.
In this regard, during 2024 the Forest Program published, through the GEOBOSQUES platform, the results of the analysis of the loss of Amazonian rainforest cover corresponding to the year 2023. During 2023, a loss of 132,216 hectares of Amazonian forests was recorded in Peru, which represented approximately 10% less compared to what was reported in 2022.
Likewise, of the 15 departments where the Peruvian Amazonian rainforests are distributed, 11 recorded a decrease in loss, compared to 2022. The cases of Amazonas, which decreased by 22%, Ucayali by 18% and Loreto by 16% stand out.
