The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) will be responsible for the administration of the Federal Environment Ministrys new e-car funding program at the Weisswasser site. The new funding program is being launched to enable more private individuals to switch to climate-neutral mobility. It will be possible to submit an application during May 2026 online at the Forderzentrale Deutschland (foerderzentrale.gov.de) the Federal Ministry of Economicss new online portal for applying for funding. Vehicles newly registered from January 1 2026 are eligible. Funding can be applied for retroactively. In addition BAFA will take over the tasks of the energy efficiency hotline in Weisswasser from January 2027.
The BAFA Weisswasser site will therefore be given two new important tasks. By taking on the task the location in the Lusatian lignite mining area will be strengthened. Weisswasser is the authoritys second largest location after the BAFA headquarters in Eschborn and has stood for successful climate protection in the building sector and for lived structural change for six years. With around 240 employees the location has grown into one of the largest employers in the region. In Weisswasser important tasks are already being carried out in the implementation of central programs - such as federal funding for efficient buildings (BEG) the adjustment allowance (APG) for employees in the regions affected by the coal phase-out as well as travel expense accounting for BAFA and other federal administration authorities.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) sees Weisswasser as an important and permanent part of the BAFA authority structure. The location also represents the federal governments goal of permanently anchoring authorities and institutions in the coal regions and creating at least 5000 additional jobs there by the end of 2028.
