π Tender Overview
Attackers have begun hacking inactive WhatsApp profiles of Russians to then call and deceive other messenger users under the guise of bank or mobile operator employees, Dmitry Chernov, director of customer service and retail business service at VimpelCom, told RIA Novosti.
"Fraudsters hack into the accounts of inactive users and start calling other messenger users, posing as bank or mobile operator employees," Chernov said.
According to him, fraudsters can change the profile picture to a company logo to create trust. Calls are made via messenger from the victim's number, unaware of the hack, which makes it difficult to identify the fraud. As a result, mass calls can be made from a hacked account.
According to the operator's rapid response team, the most common victims of this scheme are elderly people whose children or grandchildren installed the messenger.
