On November 29, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Arnold Kreilhuber, who arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the Conference on Food Security in a Climate Change.
At the meeting, the parties discussed the current state of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNEP, as well as the progress of the implementation of previously reached agreements. Specific steps taken by Turkmenistan to fulfill its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change were noted. In particular, joint measures were discussed to establish a Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia, the central office of which will be located in Ashgabat.
Particular attention was paid to the practical implementation of the terms of the Global Methane Commitment, which Turkmenistan adopted at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28). The progress of the implementation of a joint project to develop a mechanism for the regular provision of updated data on emissions detected through the MARS system, together with the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), was presented. The parties discussed the state of the Aral Sea, including Turkmenistans initiatives within the framework of the UN. In this regard, the significance of the regional meeting of Central Asian countries to be held in Ashgabat under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Committee for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to determine the structure and format of the UN Special Programme for the Aral Sea Basin was noted.
The parties also discussed issues related to the Caspian Sea. They exchanged views on the development of the Caspian Ecological Initiative, proposed by the President of Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
In this regard, the parties discussed the possibilities of strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNEP on specific projects related to adaptation to climate change in the Caspian region. The interlocutors reaffirmed their commitment to continuing active dialogue and cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
