At a retirement celebration today Senator John Hoeven helped recognize the career of Cass County Sheriff Paul D. Laney and thanked him for his service to the community. The senator also highlighted his own work in the Senate to support law enforcement through comprehensive efforts to combat the opioid abuse crisis by supporting law enforcement increasing access to treatment and preventing the sale and shipment of illicit synthetic drugs.Whether through his work in the U.S. Marine Corps with the Fargo Police Department or as Sheriff of Cass County Sheriff Laneys career is marked by excellence in service and a devotion to his country and community Hoeven said. We appreciate his many years of dedicated service especially as his department serves on the front lines of the opioid abuse epidemic. We worked hard to pass comprehensive legislation to support our law enforcement and combat opioid abuse. We thank Sheriff Laney for his many years of service and wish him the best in all his future endeavors.Last month the president signed comprehensive legislation to combat the opioid abuse crisis including provisions Hoeven cosponsored to prevent the sale and shipment of illicit synthetic drugs like fentanyl. The legislation also helps empower law enforcement and expands access to substance abuse treatment and recovery support services.Sheriff Laney was first elected sheriff of Cass County in 2006 and has since been re-elected twice more. He has received numerous accolades for his work including being named National Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriff Association and Government Leader of the Year by E911 Institutes. Sheriff Laney also serves on the board of directors for numerous national and state law enforcement and community organizations.
