πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is an intergovernmental organization made up of eight member countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela and is the only socio-environmental bloc in Latin America with the vision of the South-South Cooperation process of countries dedicated to the Amazon.

It promotes the work of the following dimensions: political-diplomatic, strategic and technical, building synergies between governments, multilateral organizations, cooperation agencies, organized civil society, social movements, scientific community, and productive sectors, with the aim of preserving the environment and the rational use of the natural resources of the Amazon.

This body was formed as a result of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ATT) signed on July 3, 1978, whose objectives are the preservation of the environment and the rational use of the natural resources of the Amazon.

In 1995, the eight member countries decided to create ACTO and in 2003 established the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO to strengthen and implement the objectives of the Agreement.

In June of this year, this organization defined lines of work for the development of the Amazonian countries during a meeting held in Brasilia, capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, where topics such as: The Promotion of Ecotourism and its role in the promotion of Sustainable Development were addressed.

The current president of the General Secretariat of ACTO, Alexandra Moreira, highlighted "the importance of raising regional agendas to address the common problems of the countries," while detailing the Amazon Regional Observatory, as "a management tool for the institutional implementation of the organization's projects."

The countries that make up this body today have the conviction that the Amazon constitutes a strategic reserve and that its particularities make it unique and one of the richest on the planet.

One of the fundamental objectives of ACTO is to promote the harmonious development of the Amazon Region, through the coordination, development, promotion and execution of programs, projects and activities.

The areas of action that the countries have defined to work on are intimately linked to the treasures that the Amazon possesses and the need to conserve them and ensure their integral management.

Call from President Maduro
In this line, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, NicolΓ‘s Maduro, pointed out in the middle of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was held in Egypt from November 6 to 18, 2022 that it is necessary to reactivate the Amazon Treaty Organization, Because the "common flag is to save the Amazon rainforest", given that "we are on time, there has been great damage in recent decades as part of the effects linked to the predatory capitalist system".

He explained, in that sense, that it is appropriate to initiate a path of protection, salvation from South America, together with the world, through the Amazon, as part of "the concrete and specific responsibilities that we have to fulfill," where an action plan must be inscribed.
