π Tender Overview
May 21, 2025, Chisinau - May, with stable temperatures and floral abundance, is one of the most favorable periods for triggering the bees bridal flight. Especially in the second half of the month, if the weather is serene and the thermal values exceed 20 deg C, phenomena of royal or bridal flight can be observed in rural and urban areas.
Nuptial flight is a key moment in the biological cycle of bees. A queen, freshly out of her cell, leaves the hive accompanied by a large group of drones. During this flight, which takes place at altitude and in an open space, the queen is mating with several drivers from different hives, thus ensuring the genetic diversity of the colony. After mating, the queen returns to the hive and begins to lay eggs, an activity she will continue throughout her life.
This phenomenon can sometimes be observed in the urban environment, including in crowded areas. The swarms in flight or temporarily placed on pillars, trees or other structures are not dangerous, as long as they are not disturbed. The bees at this stage are not aggressive, being focused on protecting the queen and finding a new shelter.
If a swarm of bees in the public space is observed, we recommend the population not to intervene and not try its dispersion. It is indicated that the situation is reported to a beekeeper in the area or the National Association of Beekeepers in the Republic of Moldova (ANARM), at the contact number: 061000505. Specialists can take the tomato safely and can relocate it in an appropriate environment.
