The project in brief
Background The human rights situation has been the main source of misunderstanding between Burundi and the international community since the outbreak of the crisis in 2015. It remains worrying due to the persistence of human rights violations, abuse and lack of accountability. The commission of inquiry on Burundi (2016-2021) was replaced by a special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Burundi; its access to the country remains problematic. This transition promoted by the international community (UN, Member States, etc.) aims to ease tensions and create conditions conducive to dialogue with Burundi. Sanctions and other forms of pressure have not produced the expected results and the Burundian authorities have, on the contrary, hardened their position. Although civil society activists and human rights defenders have expressed concern over this approach, which is seen as contrary to the reality of human rights in the country, the general feeling is rather in favor of relations more constructive with the government with a view to fostering a common understanding of the priorities likely to bring about change and therefore better respect for human rights, in particular during the electoral period.
Objectives Contribute to strengthening the institutional, operational and technical capacities of institutions and organizations responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights with a view to establishing the rule of law and a culture of accountability.

Medium-term outcomes

More Burundians, especially those at risk of being lef
