Project Summary

APEC recognises the increasing importance of new and renewable energy (NRE) in the region. It set a collective goal of doubling the share of modern NRE in the energy mix by 2030 from 2010. The region supports the global goal of tripling NRE capacity by 2030. Hence, APEC leaders encourage members to pursue efforts to contribute to the global goal through existing targets and policies as well as demonstrate similar ambition with respect to other zero and low emissions technologies including abatement and removal technologies in line with domestic circumstances by 2030.

Given this, members will strive hard to develop policies that will best suit their respective pathways. Japan has conducted peer reviews on low-carbon energy policy (PRLCE) since 2012. Recommendations showed that the policy capacities of most members need to be strengthened in formulating appropriate polices on NRE supply. To achieve this, a capacity-building workshop will succeed the PRLCE.

Relevance

Region

The project seeks to address APEC members’ increasing concern in developing policies that will guide them towards energy transition and in achieving NRE goals. The need for this capacity is especially high in the diverse APEC region where members are in various stages of development with different energy resources and infrastructures.

Each economy needs to have the energy policy formation capacity to choose its best pathway taking into account its economic and energy circumstances.
