PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND
Northeast Bulgaria is an important breeding and wintering ground for birds and a major migration route for those flying between Europe and Africa along the Via Pontica flyway. After the Via Gibraltar, this flyway is the most important migration route for European birds. About 500 000 storks and 110 000 raptors from northern, eastern and central Europe migrate through the area. As a result, bird mortality caused by energy infrastructure in thisarea is an issue that goes beyond Bulgariaβsnational borders and of general importance for EU countries whose birds migrate through or winter in the area. Bird collisions with power lines and electrocution are also a socio-economic problem as they cause network failures and power outages, resulting in economic losses and additional CO2 emissions.
OBJECTIVES
The LIFE NE BG Safe Sky project aims to prevent deaths among 16 species of threatened birds caused by electrocution and collision with overhead power lines in northeast Bulgaria.
The specific objectives are to:
Prevent non-natural bird mortality by insulating10,000 hazardous electricity pylons and by marking aerial conductors with 5 000 bird diverters in 28 Natura 2000 sites and key corridors between them
