Overall goal
This project aims at promoting more sustainable, innovative and cost-effective solutions to achieve zero hunger.
Expected results
The interventions supported by the WFP Innovation Accelerator are focused on combating hunger and malnutrition and increasing food security, with a special focus in creating sustainable food systems. Moreover, they will
- reduce poverty and support income-generating activities,
- support good health and well-being,
- advance gender equality through empowering women's participation and inclusion on all levels,
- foster access to clean water and sanitation,
- provide affordable and clean energy,
- improve climate shock mitigation tools,
- expedite partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Target group / Beneficiaries
The key target audience of the WFP Innovation Accelerator are the most vulnerable groups affected by hunger and food insecurity around the globe. Amongst others those are people in crisis areas and countries facing post-conflict instability, undernourished school children and adolescents, people impacted by severe climate shocks and stresses, and smallholder farmers from food insecure communities.
Activities
With the Austrian contribution, the WFP Innovation Accelerator will reach vulnerable populations through
- supporting innovative approaches from the first idea to the final impact, via bootcamps and acceleration programmes, establishment of concepts, development of prototypes and the conclusive implementation,
- enabling the scale-up of high-impact innovations which have already proven their project concepts within WFP field operations, to optimize their impact and reach at regional or global levels,
- exploring game-changing frontier innovations using technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cutting edge computing and robotics,
- developing new innovative finance mechanisms to attract different pools of capital to fund innovations and likewise promote financial inclusion of beneficiaries.
Context
At the moment, one of the greatest and most complex food security crises in modern times is confronting the global community. In 2024, more than 309 million people faced acute food insecurity, an increase of almost 200 million people since early 2020. There is a growing gap between the assistance that humanitarian and development actors can provide, and the number of people in need. The financial resources that are available need to stretch further and programmes must be delivered with greater speed and alacrity. Innovation will continue to be essential to meeting these aims in 2025.
