Togo is currently demonstrating growing technological dynamism. Indeed, a digitalization strategy for 2025 has been developed, with the aim of making Togo a regional reference in digitalization and innovation. While the implementation of the current strategy is focused primarily on social inclusion and the modernization of the Togolese economy through digitalization, significant efforts still need to be made.
So far, the initiatives launched for digital transformation have, for the most part, been planned and implemented by the Ministry of Digital Economy and digital transformation on the basis of the national sectoral policy on digital economy. The other initiatives are scattered impulses by different actors, both private and public. There is a lack of integrative dynamics that allows public and private actors to carry out digital transformation together with local resources and pooling their capacities.
This impacts the growth of innovation and the development of a vibrant digital ecosystem. The digital ecosystem is under construction β only a few players are specialized in digitalization. In addition, the level of digitalization within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) outside the digital sector is generally still very low. Also, the participation of women and girls in the digital sector remains low due to biases specific to the digital sector and a lack of awareness of the potential of digitalization for women and girls.
The Digital Transformation of the Togolese Economy project aims to improve the synergistic connection between public and private initiatives for the digital transformation of Togo.
The project operates on three axes:
supporting key digital public players in the development and implementation of digital transformation projects with the participation of the private sector;
improving cooperation between public and private actors to strengthen the innovative digital ecosystem;
support for the digital transformation of SMEs in Togo's key economic sectors.
To strengthen the digital transformation, the project targets actors from the Togolese public sector (with a focus on the Togo Digital Agency) and private sector (digital start-ups and SMEs, support providers with specialization in digital technology as well as traditional SMEs) as target groups.
The project, implemented by GIZ for six years, is co-financed by the European Union, including Luxembourg through a cooperation delegated to GIZ.
