Objective
Built cultural heritage and ageing infrastructure represent a cornerstone of Europeβs identity, economy and societal resilience. These assets are increasingly exposed to environmental degradation, intensified use and evolving hazard conditions, while their preservation is constrained by limited knowledge of structural behaviour, material properties and past interventions. Ensuring their long-term safety and sustainability requires a paradigm shift from traditional inspection-based approaches towards predictive, data-informed methodologies.
In this context, the concept of the Digital Twin (DT) as a continuously informed computational counterpart of a physical asset, has emerged as a transformative framework for structural assessment and monitoring. However, despite its rapid diffusion, the field remains highly fragmented. Current approaches are often discipline-specific, lacking a shared and operational strategy capable of integrating physics-based modelling, structural health monitoring (SHM) and artificial intelligence. HERI-TWIN addresses this critical gap by establishing a common interdisciplinary framework for hybrid structural digital twins, capable of combining numerical simulation, monitoring data and data-driven learning into a unified and scalable methodology. The project brings together leading EU and non-EU academic institutions and industrial partners, enabling the integration of complementary expertise across modelling, SHM, AI-tools, experimentation, sensing technologies and real-world infrastructurem anagement.
HERI-TWIN offers a structured programme of secondments, training and joint research activities, HERI-TWIN to ensure bidirectional knowledge transfer between academia and industry, fostering the preservation of heritage and infrastructure, supporting Europeβs priorities in digital transformation and resilience.
