π Tender Overview
The proposed Gympie Road Bypass Tunnel would link Kedron and Carseldine as a potential solution to ease congestion and reduce traffic on Gympie Road. The Proposal design is approximately 9 kilometres in overall length, with approximately 7 kilometres constructed as tunnel.
The Queensland Government has allocated $212.8 million (A$318 million) to finalise plans for the tunnel. As part of the 2024-25 State Budget, the State Government has approved the project to proceed to the next stage and allocated $318 million over three years commencing from July 2024.
The proposed 7km two-lane tolled tunnel between Kedron and Carseldine will:
save users up to 32 minutes per day for a return journey in peak hour
improve safety and reduce pressure on suburban roads
enable better direct connectivity to the Gympie Arterial Road benefitting motorists between Kedron all the way to the Sunshine Coast
deliver a Gross Regional Product boost of more than $8 billion and generate around 1,800 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
Gympie Road will remain as a free alternative for motorists with improved travel times to be experienced along the surface due to an estimated 40,000 vehicles per day using the tunnel.
Gateway Motorway users will also benefit from the improvements to network capacity. North Brisbane Infrastructure will continue to oversee the project working closely with Queensland Treasury and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. A new road tunnel for Brisbane in Queensland, Australia could cost from US$5.1-6.5 billion but would help address severe road congestion issues
