๐ Tender Overview
The overall project traces its origin from the National Implementation Plan (NIP) issued in 2017 by the Italian Government and from the accelerated plan of the Italian Infrastructure Manager (RFI) that envisages the deployment of ERTMS trackside on the whole rail network of 16.800 km by 2036 and, starting in 2022, a progressive decommissioning of the legacy system (SCMT), limiting the period of coexistence of a double system. It implies that Trenitalia has to install ERTMS on board its fleet accordingly and in a consistent roll up with trackside implementation that impacts selectively on regional and long distance trains, as the lines progressively are up-dated. Trenitalia is committed to install ERTMS BL3 on board of a large part of its entire national fleet by retrofitting the current Intercity and regional locomotives and through a mixed work of retrofitting and fitment on the regional medium and high capacity trainsets of new generation. Furthermore, out of the Italian context and in a way to get the entire Trenitalia rolling stock ERTMS-ready, the overall project includes the fitment on 20 brand new High Speed trainsets that are going to operate in Spain. The project covers the installation of 1011 on-board units in 535 vehicles (locomotives and trainsets) of different types.
