PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Background:
Zambia possesses large surface and groundwater resources. However, particularly in the south of the country, watersheds and thus the water security of the population are increasingly under stress. The main reasons for this are overuse, environmental degradation, and the consequences of climate change. Many tributaries that once carried water year-round are drying up, jeopardizing the livelihoods of people and animals. This leads to conflicts over water distribution between different users and food insecurity for millions of people, disproportionately affecting women.
Objective:
The integrated management of watersheds β including landscape conservation with a focus on agriculture, forests, biodiversity, water, and climate resilience β is improved in Zambia.
Approach:

The project focuses on implementing restoration and conservation measures in the lower Kafue River basin and developing the capacity of national and decentralized actors to scale up these measures. A landscape-based approach aims to improve the use and protection of natural resources, especially water. This approach considers factors such as forestry, agriculture, and biodiversity, as well as the interests of stakeholders. Strategic financing and partnerships with the government, municipalities, civil society organizations, and the private sector scale successful measures and mobilize further fundi
