PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context
The pollution of inland waters and the Adriatic Sea has become a serious regional challenge for the countries of the Western Balkans and the European Union (EU) countries bordering the Adriatic. Growing amounts of waste in rivers threaten economic activities such as tourism and fishing and endanger the health and livelihoods of people in the region. Marine litter in the Adriatic Sea consists of 90 percent plastic.
Objective
The four partner countries coordinate strategies and successfully reduce marine litter.
Approach
The program supports its partners in improving the implementation of coordinated strategies to reduce marine litter. It brings together public and private partners as well as civil society from the four countries and advises them on how to reduce the entry of plastic waste into the Adriatic Sea.
The program offers advice and training on the structural, legal, and financial aspects of extended producer responsibility (EPR). EPR is a strategic approach designed to ensure that manufacturers and processors assume responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products.
The program helps public and private partners work together to reduce marine litter. It also supports them in improving their data base on plastic waste.
As of May 2025
