Project Summary
Traditional wastewater treatment methods generate high emissions and sludge disposal challenges. UNEP projects waste in the Asia Pacific to reach 1.1 trillion tones by 2030(1), with untreated wastewater threatening human health and ecosystems. APEC should explore efficient, energy-saving industrial wastewater treatment technologies that enhance sustainability, reduce costs, and strengthen economic resilience. These solutions can minimize sludge production from petrochemical, food, and palm oil industries while promoting resource efficiency and supporting regional manufacturing sustainability. An APEC forum in 2026 will invite APEC representatives, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss wastewater treatment from policy and technical perspectives. Through knowledge exchange, the project aims to develop comprehensive wastewater management solutions for the APEC region.

Relevance
Region
Wastewater treatment plays a crucial role in maintaining public health and the environment by removing waste and pollutants from industrial and domestic sectors. However, traditional wastewater treatment technologies are often energy-intensive, primarily from aeration, pumping, and chemical treatments. Moreover, the byproducts generated, including sludge and chemical waste, further become environmental burdens, contributing to landfill issues and complex disposal methods.
As concerns about waste management, environmental challenges, and resource depletion grow, the need for sustainable and energy-efficient alternatives in wastewater treatment i
