The proposed project consists of building energy infrastructure and installing the biogas system, including the Borda fixed dome biodigester with a capacity of 50 m3 VC. Methanization has advantages at three different levels, namely: energy, agricultural and environmental.
Energy: from an energy point of view, the biogas produced is a renewable energy source that can be used for cooking, lighting, refrigeration and motorization. The biogas can be stored and used as needed and can be transformed into natural gas by the purification system.
Agricultural: the fermentation residue (effluent) can be collected from the digestate storage pit and used as organic fertilizer with the same properties as organic fertilizer NPK 17: 17: 17 or NPK 10: 10: 10 by spreading on crop soils. Thus, the system makes it possible to recover agricultural waste (straw, manure) andstimulate agricultural production.
Environment: in terms of the environment, the system helps limit deforestation because it reduces or even eliminates the use of wood in the proportions of 80% for cooking. It also helps solve certain hygiene and sanitation problems following the methanization of human excreta and other biodegradable waste into biogas energy. Finally, biogas helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The purpose of the project is to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and the pressure on tree felling through the use of alternative energy to wood. In Burundi, wood "energy" alone represents 97% of the volume consumed nationally. It is therefore the main cause of deforestation. Since Burundi is not industrialized, deforestation remains the main source of greenhouse gases. Thus, the use of alternative energy to wood such as biogas constitutes a strategic measure to reduce the rate of deforestation and thereby reduce greenhouse gases at the local level.
