Objective
MATTERS aims to reduce environmental impacts and improve the climate resilience of transport infrastructure while ensuring safety and functionality requirements. The project addresses the challenges of ageing infrastructure, increasing climate hazards, degrading ecosystems, resource scarcity and the limitations of current construction, maintenance and asset-management practices, which remain resource- and carbon-intensive and rely on fragmented assessment approaches.
MATTERS delivers and demonstrates an integrated portfolio of innovative materials, advanced engineering methods and digital decision-support tools; starting from partnersβ previous lab validated research results; creating new pre-normative frameworks.
The project adopts a holistic life-cycle approach covering design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning of transport infrastructure. It particularly develops low-carbon concretes with alternative binders and high recycled aggregate content, bio-based asphalt binders and mixtures, and advanced service-life extension and repair techniques. Also, it establishes circularity and reuse-by-design methodologies supported by digital product passports, as well as frameworks for integrating nature-based solutions. These are embedded in a resilience and sustainability assessment framework, which integrates asset level data into quantitative evaluation at network level, supporting infrastructure decision-making through a modular digital toolbox able to compare solutions.
MATTERS solutions are validated in operational conditions in 4 demos covering road, rail and waterway infrastructures across TEN-T corridors in Austria, France, Germany and Hungary, addressing all life-cycle stages and providing evidence on resilience, sustainability and ecosystem impacts.
Replication pathways along TEN-T corridors are boosted thanks to standardisation and Green Public Procurement guidelines, but also by a Community of Practice formed by industry and infrastructure managers.
