Description
The proposed technical assistance (TA) aims to modernize Bangladesh's power distribution infrastructure by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance sustainability, operational efficiency, service reliability, and climate resilience. Building on ADB's existing pipeline of power distribution projects, the TA aims to develop AI-based distribution components that could be integrated into the lending plans of these projects. The TA seeks to facilitate the creation of an AI-powered distribution grid, enhancing efficiency and resilience, while advancing the transition toward modern, clean, sustainable, and robust power distribution systems.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy
The imperative of supporting energy transition through grid modernization. Bangladesh faces significant challenges in transitioning to a sustainable energy future. High and volatile fuel prices have strained foreign exchange reserves, increased government energy subsidies, and worsened fiscal imbalances. Rapidly rising electricity demand, combined with an aging grid infrastructure, has exacerbated these issues, resulting in frequent load shedding and power outages. These disruptions severely impact industrial production, forcing industries to increasingly rely on captive gas-based generators for power supply. To address these challenges, the government of Bangladesh prioritizes investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports and curb the escalating subsidy burden. However, achieving a green energy transition requires a fundamental transformation of the power systems, calling for substantial investment. The existing aged distribution network can accommodate only a limited share of renewable energy. Modernizing the power grid is critical to enabling greater renewable energy integration, reducing load shedding, improving grid reliability, and encouraging industries to shift from gas-based captive plants to grid power, thus supporting the country's energy transition goals.
