PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context
The marine area beyond the territorial sea β Mauritania's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) β is one of the richest fisheries regions in the world. Around 300,000 people are employed in the fishing sector. The coastal zone serves as an important habitat and is protected by two national parks. However, there is a lack of protective measures for spawning grounds, especially for species that are already overfished.
Although fish consumption has increased, the food security of many people in rural areas remains insecure. Because a large proportion of the catch is exported, fish is unaffordable for poorer sections of the population.
Objective
Fishery resources are used in an ecologically sustainable manner to contribute to Mauritania's food security.
Approach
The focus of the project is to protect the spawning grounds of endangered fish stocks, which are essential for human nutrition. These resources can only be used long-term through improved management.
The project also supports monitoring institutions in collecting representative stock data and in exchanging information with regional and international stakeholders.
The project also ensures that hygiene standards are maintained and the range of high-quality fish products is expanded. A greater product diversity and new distribution channels are intended to reach broader population groups, for example, through subsidized school meals.
The project develops biodiversity-friendly approaches together with environmental stak
