Resilience Improvement Milan Tender

The Action concerns the improvement of the resilience of the Milan Malpensa (MXP) airport located on the Rhine-Alpine and Mediterranean corridors against climate change and natural disasters. The Milan Malpensa Airport represents a node of the TEN-T Core Network and it is the second-biggest airport in Italy in terms of number of passengers handled and the biggest in the country for freight transported. The Action will address the flooding and earthquake risks affecting various airport areas. This is done through several infrastructure upgrades and improvements and with the development of a multi¬hazard smart monitoring system. The Action will carry out the Final Design and Detailed Design studies (WP2) and subsequently the construction works (WP3 and WP4) in the different critical areas identified in the Prelimniary Design phase (not part of the Action). It will improve the drainage system as flooding risk mitigation and will upgrade the Passengers Terminal 1 mainly reinforcing the building’s structure as seismic risk mitigation. Finally, it will develop multi¬hazard smart monitoring system (WP5) to provide real-time knowledge of infrastructural behaviour under operational and exceptional climate conditions. The main benefit of the Action will be the reduction of the restrictions in operational flights and airport closures due to flooding, and the prevention of negative consequence due to seismic incidents. As a result, it will lead to a reduction in operating costs for the airport operator, reduction in externalities (due to diverted traffic in case of airport disruption), and time saving for passengers potentially affected. Moreover, it will ensure infrastructure compliance with the national antiseismic construction regulations (Italian seismic code).
