Project Summary
This project proposes a survey and workshop to facilitate the exchange and sharing of information on carbon emissionmanagement, as well as carbonreduction and capturepractices for unban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).The survey will provide a high-level overview of regional standards, practices, and experiences relatedto carbon emissionmanagement and the application of carbon reduction and capture techniques in WWTPs. The workshop aims to foster an APEC-wide discussion on these standards and practices, as well as explore the potential for developing international standards in this area. Effective communication among members will play a key role in disseminating knowledge about these standards, technologies, and best practices for managing, reducing, and capturing carbon emissions, and ultimately promoting the joint sustainable development within the region.
Relevance
Region
The APEC region accounts for more than 50% of global carbon emissions. Wastewater treatment is among the top ten greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting industries globally and represents a critical sector for GHG accounting in efforts to combat climate change. Carbon emissions from wastewater treatment account for 2%-3% of total global emissions, with an upward trend observed annually. While the processof wastewater treatment not only consumes energy and resources but also presents significant opportunities for energy recovery and resource utilization, positioning it as a potentialcontributor to negativecarbon emissions.
Standardizing carbon emissionmanagement, reduction, and capture technologies and practices is essential for drivingcarbon neutrality and emissio
