Project General Description
This intervention concerns the Treated Wastewater Quality Improvement Project for Climate Resilience Building (PAQEE-RCC). It aims to improve the water balance, build climate resilience and improve the living conditions of citizens. Reusing TWW will help to increase the available water (non-conventional water) and improve the balance between water needs and resources. It will enable the country to more resilient to climate change and provide water for all uses during the increasingly more frequent dry years. Improving the quality of treated wastewater will help to improve people's living conditions. The deterioration of the operating conditions of WWTPs lead to frequent stoppages due to breakdowns, resulting in the discharge of water of substandard quality and various nuisances (odours, etc.). The main project components are as follows (i) upgrading wastewater treatment plants; (ii) acquiring operating equipment; (iii) installing solar energy collection equipment; and (iv) capacity building and institutional support.
Project Objectives
The sectoral objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the water balance, the resilience to climate change and the living conditions of citizens through the reuse of treated wastewater. The project's development objective is to improve the quality of treated wastewater and the purification and energy performance of WWTPs.
Beneficiaries
A population of around 670,000 is directly affected by the improvement to its living environment following the rehabilitation/extension of the WWTPs concerned by the project. In addition, around 3,357 hectares of farmland will be irrigated using treated wastewater from these WWTPs. Farmers cultivating around 3,357 hectares will receive treated water for their irrigation needs. For the capacity-building component, the main beneficiaries are ONAS managers (more than 600 managers, including at least 200 women) whose technical capacity will be strengthened through training and technical assistance.
