Objective
TWIN HERIT is an ambitious Twinning initiative designed to unlock the next generation of predictive, data driven cultural heritage preservation. At its core, the project will help the University of Belgrade β Faculty of Physical Chemistry (UBFPC) to become a recognised centre of excellence in heritage science by combining advanced chemistry, digital technologies and European level collaboration.
Through a strategic partnership with three leading institutions: the University of Ljubljana, the University of Bologna, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, TWIN HERIT will accelerate scientific excellence via intensive knowledge transfer, joint research, staff exchanges, training, and mentoring. The project pioneers innovative, interpretable and physics informed models that link environmental conditions to material degradation in real heritage contexts, enabling a decisive shift from reactive conservation to predictive and preventive strategies.
A flagship outcome of TWIN HERIT is the creation of a shared digital infrastructure, the Proto Serbian Heritage Data Cloud , which will curate, harmonise and make heritage data FAIR compliant, interoperable and reusable, while connecting UBFPC to key European cultural heritage data ecosystems. Beyond scientific advances, the project delivers lasting institutional impact by strengthening research management capacities, nurturing early career talent, and embedding European best practices within UBFPC.
By integrating cutting edge research, capacity building and institutional transformation, TWIN HERIT ensures that excellence is not temporary but structurally embedded. The project positions UBFPC as a regional hub for data driven heritage science, strengthens its integration into the European Research Area, and contributes tangible scientific, societal and policy value for the long term protection of Europeβs shared cultural heritage.
