Objective
The TWINEXOHAND project aligns with the HEU WIDERA objective to close the research and innovation gap across the European Union. Coordinated by the University of Ioannina (UOI) in Greece, this Twinning action aims to significantly strengthen UOIβs scientific excellence, innovation capabilities and institutional research management capacities. UOI will establish a strategic partnership with 3 internationally leading institutions: CTAG (Spain), INEGI (Portugal) and SANTER REPLY (Italy). Scientifically, the project focuses on advancing materials and manufacturing techniques to develop next-generation exoskeleton wearables. The collaborative research will deliver a multi-material 3D-printed exoskeleton hands with embedded electromyography (EMG) electrodes for dual-use rehabilitation or assistance. This approach directly addresses current technological limitations regarding the lack of integration between sensing, control and structural components in wearable robotics. The project's objectives will be achieved through a structured methodology encompassing 4 core pillars: 1) continuous knowledge sharing and expertise transfer via targeted technical training and workshops; 2) joint collaborative research to co-create and validate functional, human-centered exoskeleton prototypes; 3) immersive mobility schemes, including short-term secondments for researchers and administrative staff to gain practical experience at partner innovation facilities; 4) strategic networking to engage cross-sector stakeholders and co-create a sustainable, long-term collaborative R&I roadmap. Furthermore, TWINEXOHAND will upgrade UOIβs research support structures by upskilling staff in alignment with the European Competence Framework for Research Managers. Ultimately, the project will raise UOIβs international profile, increase its success in competitive funding and contribute to a more inclusive European Research Area, while delivering meaningful democratized societal impacts in health sector.
