Objective
TWINE aims to significantly strengthen the research excellence and international competitiveness of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) through structured collaboration with leading European institutions in truffle ecosystem science. By combining scientific training, staff exchanges, institutional mentoring and joint research activities, the project will enhance UNSAβs capacity to participate in and coordinate competitive European research projects, in line with the objectives of the European Research Area.
Bosnia and Herzegovina represents an underexplored region with high ecological potential for truffle ecosystems but limited research infrastructure and international integration. TWINE uses this domain as an interdisciplinary platform for knowledge transfer across ecology, genetics, soil science, metabolomics and environmental monitoring.
The project will generate baseline ecological and genetic knowledge on native truffle populations while transferring advanced methodologies and research management and administration (RMA) practices. These activities are designed primarily to build sustainable institutional capacity rather than to produce large-scale research outputs.
By the end of the project, UNSA will operate an enhanced RMA framework, strengthened scientific competencies and durable international partnerships, enabling its integration into European research networks. In the longer term, TWINE will position UNSA as a regional hub for truffle ecosystem science in the Western Balkans, contributing to biodiversity knowledge, sustainable natural resource management and reducing research disparities within the European Research Area.
