π Tender Overview
In Burkina Faso, 65.5% of adults are illiterate and 50% of children aged 6 to 16 (3 million) are excluded from school. Switzerland supports the diversification of educational alternatives for those excluded from education, in order to strengthen the literacy skills and technical and vocational knowledge of nearly 250,000 learners. This support contributes to improving socio-economic integration and living conditions, thus preventing irregular migration and recruitment by armed groups.

The project in brief
Background Burkina Faso, with a population of nearly 24 million, has one of the highest population growth rates in the world (3.1%). More than 60% of the population is under 25 years old, and the illiteracy rate is 65.5% on average, but three times higher in rural areas and even higher among women (71%). This accelerated growth and the youth of the Burkinabe population are putting significant pressure on the education system. Added to these demographic characteristics are the school dropouts caused by the ongoing security crisis. This security context increases early school leaving and further exposes children to risks of vulnerability, including recruitment by armed groups. Since its creation in 2002, the Fund for Literacy and Non-Formal Education (FONAENF), a non-profit organization recognized as being of public utility, has enabled more than 3 million people to be declared literate. Despite these combined efforts, the illiterate population remains large, and underfunding of the sector only covers 23% of the needs for opening literacy centers. Switzerland intends to continue supporting FONAENF to contribute to increasing and improving the quality of non-formal education provision and the institutional and organizational capacities of the national mechanism. This unique phase in support of the 2025-2029 strategic development plan is being implemented throughout Burkina Faso, with a focus on the three regions identified as priorities by the SDC (Centre Nord, Centre Ouest, and Hauts Bassins). YirSor's support for the strategic plan will reach 244,800 adolescents, young people, and adults, 50% of whom are girls/women (i.e., 61,200 per year over the four years).
