The project in brief
Background Niger's context is marked by political and security instability, an economic situation characterized by a significant decline in purchasing power and persistent inflation, as well as an increase in population displacement and restrictions on individual freedoms. In addition, civic space has shrunk considerably, weakening freedom of expression and threatening the very existence of independent media. In this context, it is essential that affected populations have access to reliable, accessible and relevant information, capable of shedding light and raising awareness of current issues, strengthening social cohesion, promoting innovative initiatives and solutions adapted to the challenges encountered. Promoting spaces for exchange and dialogue, both within the populations themselves and between citizens and public actors, is crucial. The second phase of the Media Support program responds to these needs by focusing on the production and dissemination of independent and multilingual information, adapted to the specific needs and disparities in access to information between rural and urban areas, women and men, as well as vulnerable groups. It also aims to strengthen the capacities of partner media outlets and women media professionals to produce credible, interactive, and engaged content, particularly in the fight against gender inequality. Furthermore, the project tackles disinformation. To this end, it relies on strong partnerships with radio federations and civil society organizations, while promoting sustainability through skills transfer and the strengthening of local economic models.
